Nature, science and culture meet at Australia’s first museum
Complete with immersive exhibitions and interactive experiences, a visit to the Australian Museum is the perfect day out for families, kids of all ages and the young at heart – plus General Admission is now free!
The Australian Museum is located in the centre of Sydney city, opposite Hyde Park, with easy access from public transport and a short walk from other popular attractions in the CBD and surrounds.
Visit the iconic heritage Australian Museum building, where Sydney’s history and award-winning contemporary architecture intersect.

Opening hours to visit our permanent exhibitions and galleries are:From 13 April - 19 May 2024, the Australian Museum has extended opening hours:
- 9am - 9pm Monday - Sunday
Please note: Burra learning space is open 10am- 4:30pm. Billabong Waterhole Café on Level 2 is open 9.30am to 4.45pm daily. Last orders 4.30pm.
Booking: Tickets are not required for General Admission to the Australian Museum. For special events and major exhibitions, we recommend visitors pre-purchase tickets online.
Location: The Australian Museum is located on the corner of College Street and William Street in central Sydney. It is across the road from Hyde Park and opposite St Mary's Cathedral.
Getting here: The nearest train stations are St James, Museum and Town Hall. If travelling by bus, alight at Town Hall or anywhere near Hyde Park. There is no on-site parking at the Museum, but there are numerous parking stations nearby and in the CBD, including Wilson Parking in the Domain. Australian animals: Learn about Australia’s unique fauna, such as the iconic koala, the extinct Tasmanian Tiger, deadly snakes and giant spiders in Surviving Australia on Level 2.
First Nations Gallery: Discover the stories and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples – one of the oldest continuing cultures in the world in Garrigarrang on Level UG.
Dinosaurs: In Sydney, we’re known as “the dinosaur museum,” and there’s a good reason for that! Explore the giant fossilised skeletons and life-size casts of Australian dinosaurs as well as the infamous Stegosaurus and T.Rex in Dinosaurs on Level 2.
The Westpac Long Gallery: Australia’s first gallery, showcases 100 treasures from our collections alongside the stories of 100 of Australia’s most-influential people in 200 Treasures on Level G.

Ramses Shop: Open exclusively to Ramses & the Gold of the Pharaohs visitors, the exhibition shop has a glittering array of ancient Egyptian-themed items to commemorate your visit. Please note: The exhibition shop does not accept cash.
Billabong Waterhole: Located on Level 2, recharge with a coffee and sandwich, fruit salad or snack at our family-friendly café. Take away or eat in.
Bistro Gadi: Located on Level 4, this pop-up bistro offers guests a casual, interactive dining experience with spectacular views overlooking Hyde Park, St Mary's Cathedral and Woolloomooloo Bay. Open 11am to 3pm daily throughout the Ramses & the Gold of the Pharaohs exhibition run. Last orders 2.45pm.
